As you may recall from my last post, I was recently in the market for a car. After picking up my new set of wheels last night, I had to return the plates from my old car to the Registry of Motor Vehicles (that’s like the DMV for those of you who don’t live in the Commonwealth) this morning so I wouldn’t have to pay to insure both my new and my old car for too long. And I have to admit, my heart sank a little when I thought about heading to that much-maligned bastion of bureaucracy this morning.
I dutifully arrived at 8:15 to wait in line for the office to open at 9am, figuring the earlier I got there, the less late I would be to work. Apparently I wasn’t the only one with this idea… here’s the scene outside the building this morning:
Not a good sign. I hunkered down and prepared myself for a long, miserable morning. But… (you may need to sit down to read this without injuring yourself)… I was wrong and the experience was almost (dare I say?) pleasant!
The RMV opened its doors five minutes early to direct people to the appropriate counters when they officially opened at 9:00 a.m. And it turns out I didn’t even have to wait in line – there’s a handy little kiosk that can process a license plate return automatically!
I made it to the office at 9:09 a.m. – and my colleagues were just as surprised as I at how quick the process was. So props to you, RMV! It seems like your reputation might be undeserved after all!
