A few weeks ago I was in a Best Buy shopping for a new Apple iPod. Using my smartphone, I compared the in-store price to the Best Buy online price, which offered the same product for $10 less. Bingo. Thanks to my smartphone, I saved $10 as Best Buy matched the price of their online offering.
Well, it appears that during the upcoming holiday shopping season they’ll be plenty of shoppers — more than ever in fact — who, like me, will be relying on their mobile phones to get the best deal possible.
According to IBM’s Coremetrics Benchmark, this holiday season will see mobile retail traffic more than double over last year.
Without a doubt, mobile shopping is off and running.
Mobile devices — including tablets — allow shoppers to compare prices, read consumer product reviews and search for discounts in real-time. And of course, mobile device users can make purchases on their device as well. And they — ‘er we — can do all of this while standing in front of the desired product in our brick and mortar store of choice.
To gear up for this holiday shopping season, which is already well underway for many bargain hunters, national chains are optimizing their websites for the mobile web, launching smartphone applications (or doing both) and updating their social media presence.
Mobile devices — from feature phones to smartphones to tablets — are one more sales channel that help drive brand loyalty and revenue. And this year is shaping up to be a banner year for companies who are catering to the fast-growing mobile community.
Together with our business partner, Modapt, Inc., we want to get first-hand information about how you intend to use your mobile device to navigate the 2011 holiday shopping season.
To this end, later this week be on the look out for a brief survey that tries to understand how you are using your mobile device during this holiday shopping season. Do you prefer mobile apps or a mobile web browser? What types of purchases have you already made with your mobile device? What are the barriers to making a mobile purchase?
It will take you only a few minutes to complete the survey and all respondents will be entered into a drawing to win a $100 Amazon gift card.
Watch this space for a link to the survey. We’ll share the results with you in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, happy shopping.
